Our Winner:

  • Timothee Chalamet (Beautiful Boy) – Whilst the film struggled under the weight of its subject, Chalamet once again proved that he is a massive talent that should not be ignored. The maturity of his performance sees him just pip a very tight category.

Beautiful Boy 2018 Impeccably acted true tale of a father trying to 'save' his drug addict son. There is little in the way of plot so it would be hard to say I enjoyed the film, or to recommend others watch it, but that doesn't mean I didn't appreciate it. Gordon 7
BlackKklansman 2018 Despite its wewighty subject matter Spike Lee has crafted an engaging film that works as both history and entertainment. Gordon 8
BlackKKlansman 2018 As funny as it is powerful, as thrilling as it is harrowing, Spike Lee's film delivers an incredibly strong message in the most entertaining way possible, with an ending that is both shocking and necessary. A film the whole world should see. Mat 10
Can You Ever Forgive Me? 2018 True story of a down on her luck author who forges literary correspondence to make ends meet. I can't agree with Oscar nominations for McCarthy or Grant, but it is a nice film that has enough humour without becoming the kind of farce both are usually in. Gordon 7
Green Book 2018 if you take it as a biopic of the driver and not of Don Shirley or an exploration of the Green Book itself, then it is a great film. Viggo was brilliant in his lead role and the chemistry with Ali worked well. Gordon 8
Vice 2018 Initially Vice appears to be just an excuse to re-do the Big Short formula and for Bale to dust off his Batman voice, but in fact it is another fascinating docu-dramedy from the master of this new genre, Adam McKay. Gordon 8
