MovieMuse Academy Awards 2017 – Part 2/3

In part two of the MovieMuse Awards we bring you the writing and ‘supporting’ categories…

Nominees: Hell or High Water, I Daniel Blake, La La Land, The Lobster, Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight, 20th Century Women.

Best Original Screenplay

Winner: I, Daniel Blake (Paul Laverty)

What we said: “Paul Laverty’s crushing screenplay about the hypocrisy and bureaucracy of the British welfare state. Telling a believable and heartbreaking story of two of the system’s victims, Ken Loach’s improvisational directing style only increases the believability of the performances and in the few places where the film takes a mis-step, these appear on Loach’s report card rather than Laverty.”

Runner Up: Manchester by the Sea

Oscar Winner: Manchester by the Sea

BAFTA Winner: Manchester by the Sea

Nominees: Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hidden Figures, Lion, Moonlight, Nocturnal Animals

Best Adapted Screenplay

Winner: Moonlight (Barry Jenkins)

What we said: “There was initial surprise to see Barry Jenkins listed as an adapted screenplay by the American academy and an original by the British. This is explained due to the play that it was adapted from (also written by Jenkins with Tarell Alvin McCraney) being unpublished, but in reality is no doubt just a clever tactic from the production company to avoid going up against the hot favourite for the Original Oscar. Regardless, Moonlight is a terrific tale of three stages in a a man’s life as he deals with his dysfunctional home life and comes to terms with his sexuality in an unforgiving environment.”

Runner Up: Lion

Oscar Winner: Moonlight

BAFTA Winner: Lion

Nominees: Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nocturnal Animals), Dev Patel (Lion), Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water), Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea), Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals).

Best Supporting Actor

Winner: Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)

What we said: “Despite only appearing in the first of the three acts, Mahershala Ali puts in the kind of mesmeric performance that elevates the whole film. His tender hard man is one of the many, but probably the most profound, of the main character’s influences as he goes from withdrawn child to awkward teen and then hard but troubled dealer. Whilst the type of film probably doesn’t allow for it, a spin off telling the story of the rise and fall of Ali’s Juan would be a mighty appealing project.”

Runner Up: Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals)

Oscar Winner: Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)

BAFTA Winner: Dev Patel (Lion)

Nominees: Hayley Squires (I, Daniel Blake), Viola Davis (Fences), Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Nicole Kidman (Lion), Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures), Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea)

Best Supporting Actress

Winner: Naomie Harris (Moonlight)

What we said: “After action packed and glamorous roles, Naomie Harris really stepped out of her comfort zone as she stepped into the role of a junkie mother who resents her son for spoiling her fun, but ultimately finds a cause more attractive than the smack..Harris’ transformation is completed by an amazing hair and make up job that add years and a brawling American accent that is so far from Miss Moneypenny that it is hard to believe they come from the same mouth.”

Runner Up: Viola Davis (Fences)

Oscar Winner: Viola Davis (Fences)

BAFTA Winner: Viola Davis (Fences)
