MovieViews

The MovieMuse Reviews (MovieViews) database is a searchable collection of films that the team have watched, providing a comprehensive guide on what to watch and what to avoid. It provides a link to an in-depth review or a short opinion on the film and a rating, as well as a link to the film’s poster or DVD cover. For more recent entries we are also including a link to the film’s IMDb page and a trailer from YouTube.

You can search and sort the list by individual film names, genre, reviewer, score and other variables to inform you on whether a film is worth your time, or to inspire you for your next movie night.

We will also use the database to create periodic lists of the recommended films in all sorts of categories. These lists will be shared on the website and some will even come with a video.

'71 2014 7, 20, 21 Intense, thrilling and well-acted, this is a gripping story set amidst a conflict I know little about, which makes it all the more interesting. 8
Hail Satan? 2019 6 Not as offensive as you might expect, this amusing documentary is more about the influence of mainstream religion on US politics and the hypocrisy that engenders. The most amusing aspect is that Satanists seem to be a lot more balanced than Christians! 6
Child's Play 2019 11 An unnecessary reboot of the 80s horror franchise that is overly gory in places, but it has some amusing moments and a few meaningful things to say about the influx of smart devices in our homes. 6
Roxanne Roxanne 2017 3, 7, 12 A biopic of battle rap pioneer Roxanne Shante that relegates the music to a bit part, but has very little to fill the void. Shante's rise is impressive, but not that interesting. 5
Weekender 2011 4, 12 The fun ends and the misery begins all too quickly as a group of teens fight drug habits and rival street gangs as they look to become legends in the Rave scene. Jack O'Connel is great, but the rest of the acting is well below par. 5
Northern Soul 2014 7, 12 A film that explores the youth culture of 1970s Northern England as two young lads meet and form a bond over their love of Northern Soul music. Well worth it if you are a fan of the music or just like a good buddy drama. 7
Finding Dory 2016 1, 2, 4 A wonderful sequel sees Dory off in search of her parents. Some great new characters (like the wonderful octopus Hank), locations and comedy make Dory an improvement on the already excellent Finding Nemo. 8
Extraction 2020 Action Mercenary extracts criminal's son from another criminal. The Dhakar setting is refreshing and If you want two hours of gun-fights followed by fist-fights then look no further. If you want dialogue and a plot that runs to more than two lines, look away. 5
Midnight Run 1988 Action, 4, 5 Despite being a run of the mill buddy-cop style farce, DeNiro and Godin's chemistry and the ridiculousness of the situation (ex-cop bounty hunter and his mark racing from NY to LA while on the run from a crime boss and the FBI) makes for a fun 2 hours. 7
Crooklyn 1994 4, 7 Spike Lee's semi-autobiographical family drama is a stunningly presented look at 70s Brooklyn and the people that inhabit it. Though the story doesn't hit as hard as you might hope. 7
The Wizard 1989 1, 4, 8 Click to see our Film Club review. 3.2
Queen & Slim 2019 5, 7, 16 An almost perfect film follows first daters as they go on a road-trip to evade the police when they accidentally kill a traffic cop. Stunning performances, production and soundtrack. 9
Vivarium 2019 11, 13, 17 A twisted tale of a couple trapped in a house with an abnormally ageing child. Surprisingly apt in the current state of forced seclusion and has a freaky, foreboding sense of isolation and despair. 7
The Rhythm Section 2020 5, 7, 20 Despite some great direction, good performances and a killer electronic score, the ludicrous evolution from down and out junkie to international assassin is all too easy. 6
Blue Story 2019 5, 7 A clever cautionary tale about the futility of gang culture. Told with heart and a great voiceover/narration in the form of Rapman's music. 8
Lady and the Tramp 2019 1, 4, 7 The move from animation to live action strips all the charm from the film and make the songs superfluous. The CGI doesn't help matters either and I really didn't care if they escaped the dogcatcher or not. 5
Trolls World Tour 2020 1, 2, 4 Footloose with plastic toys. Despite the convoluted adult plot, Trolls World Tour is a grand spectacle that unfortunately misses the sweet spot for kids and is a little bit too glee for adults. 6
Bad Boys For Life 2020 Action, 4, 5 Despite Smith's charisma and his chemistry with Lawrence, the film has the kind of plot that should be free with a box of cornflakes, lame jokes and obvious set pieces. Sets up for a sequel that I hope doesn't come. 4
Dolemite Is My Name 2019 3, 4, 7 A superb biopic of Blacksploitation pioneer Rudy Ray Moore and his rise to stardom. Funny, filthy and foul-mouthed. Just like Rudy! 8
Made in Dagenham 2010 3, 4, 7 For such a huge achievement, the successful strike action by the Ford Motor Company machinists in Dagenham and the subsequent equal pay bill that it was responsible for, this is quite a lacklustre film. 5
About Time 2013 4, 7, 9 Despite being just another Richard Curtis middle class rom-com, About Time throws in a mild time travel twist and likeable characters to stand above much of his 2000s outout. 7
Peter Rabbit 2018 Action, 4, 8 A surprisingly funny and exciting family film with just enough mischief and mayhem to please adults and kids. The excellent rabbit CGI is worth a mention too. 7
Mrs. Lowry & Son 2019 3, 7 Vanessa Redgrave and Timothy Spall give outstanding performances in a wonderfully understated portrayal of a very ordinary man who would later become one of Britain's greatest painters. 8
Last Christmas 2019 4, 7, 16 Despite it's tough facade, it is still the horribly saccharine and twee rom-com that you fear it will be. But it is definitely not terrible and has some great George Michael music throughout. 5
Speed of Life 2019 7, 13, 17 The basis of a good relationship drama as a man disappears on the day of David Bowie's death, only to return 24 years later without aging a day. But the SciFi is flimsy and pay off not worth the wait. 5
