The MovieMuse Reviews (MovieViews) database is a searchable collection of films that the team have watched. It provides a link to an in-depth review or a short opinion on the film and a rating, as well as a link to the film’s poster or DVD cover. Over time this will build into a comprehensive guide about what to watch and what to avoid.

You can search and sort the list by individual film names, genre, reviewer, score and other variables to inform you on whether a film is worth your time, or to inspire you for your next movie night.

We will also use the database to create periodic lists of the recommended films in all sorts of categories. These lists will be shared on the website and some will even come with a video.

My Soul to Take 2010 Horror Wes Craven's penultimate film has an interesting premise but is let down by poor acting, unnecessary gore and a story that is all over the place. 2
Shaft 2019 Action, Comedy A better than expected revival of the Shaft series, with Samuel L. Jackson taking centre stage as a caricature of his many film roles. Nobody is taking this movie seriously and as a result it's a lot of fun and a decent action thriller to boot. 3.5
The Dirt 2019 Biopic, Drama A whistle-stop tour of the highs and lows of one of the most debauched bands in Rock'n'Roll history, which doesn’t illicit any strong feelings other than that these boys are very lucky to still be alive. 2.5
The Karate Kid Part II 1986 Action, Drama The focus on Japanese culture is admirable (if a little half-hearted) and Macchio and Morita are both decent again, but the story is bland and repetitive and the one dimensional villains are terrible. 2.5
Lost Boys 2: The Tribe 2008 Action, Comedy, Horror A low budget rehash of the original film with poor acting across the board. When Corey Feldman is the best thing about a movie you know it's not good! 2
WALL-E 2008 Animation, Fantasy, SciFi Much was made of the dialogue-free opening and warnings about climate change and consumerism, but the real standout is the main character - an innocent soul who manages to enrich the lives of everyone he crosses paths with. A simply beautiful film. 4.5
Alpha Dog 2006 Crime, Drama If you can handle the vile language, shocking violence and despicable characters, there's actually a pretty decent and ultimately heartbreaking film here with fine performances from the young cast, particularly Yelchin and most surprisingly Timberlake. 3
The Silence 2019 Horror, Thriller A clever premise that makes for some occasionally tense scenes, and the acting is reasonable, but the weird Cult sub-plot is weak and the ending is both rushed and unsatisfactory. 3
In the Line of Fire 1993 Action, Crime, Drama Clint was already far too old to be playing the guy who got the girl, but the tale of a presidential security detail racing to thwart Jon Malkovich's assassin is tight and entertaining right through to the finish. 3.5
Triple Frontier 2019 Action, Crime, Thriller The characters in this good-guys rob the bad-guys caper have more mood swings than a menopausal matinee, but the action holds up well as they are chased through the Andes with 100 holdalls full of cash. 3.5
Mystic River 2003 Crime, Drama, Mystery Well acted (both leads deserved their awards) and produced Thriller from Clint Eastwood, but the outcome was a little bit too obvious and there was a completely pointless side story for Kevin Bacon that just detracted from the main tale. 3.5
Captain Marvel 2019 Action, Adventure, SciFi It may be light on plot, but the theming and humourous dialogue make Captain Marvel a worthy addition to the MCU. Though Brie Larson needs to work on her running style if we are to take her athletic ability seriously! 3.5
The Mule 2018 Crime, Drama Clint is excellent as the ageing but charismatic war vet who accidentally becomes a cartels most successful drugs mule. 3.5
Wake Up, Ron Burgundy 2004 Comedy Thrown together from alternate takes and deleted scenes from Anchorman, this can’t really be assessed as a real movie and is pretty uneven, but occasionally there are still some hilarious scenes. 2.5
Saw 2004 Horror, Thriller The sequels may have given the series a reputation for low-brow gore, but the first film is a clever, innovative and terrifying mystery thriller that does its best with a limited cast and budget. A minor classic in the horror genre. 3.5
The Final Girls 2015 Comedy, Horror There are some terrible effects and limited acting, but the story is smarter than the budget deserves, cleverly parodying 80s slasher movies whilst also offering some touching moments that are rarely seen in this genre. 3
Avengers: Endgame 2019 Action, SciFi, Thriller A fitting finale for some of the characters that this franchise was built around, while others are almost ruined. Ultimately it follows the formula of most Marvel films, which is becoming a bit tiresome. A good film, but at the end I was glad it was over. 3.5
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome 1985 Action, Fantasy The increased budget compared to the earlier films shows in the extravagant production design, but as with all the entries in the series the story is rather simplistic. Sags in the middle but the action at either end is spectacular. 3
In the Mouth of Madness 1994 Horror, Thriller Some of the acting is terrible and the effects have aged badly, but this is still one of the better offerings from John Carpenter's post-80s output, with an story that is as interesting as it is crazy. 3
The Wolverine 2013 Action, Thriller The Japanese setting and gritty tone set this apart from most Marvel movies, and at its best it's a decent no-frills action thriller. Unfortunately the showdown with the giant Samurai-bot is more akin to typical superhero films and lets it down a bit. 3.5
Us 2019 Horror, Thriller An excellent thriller (though not really scary/horror). Jordan Peele is a breath of fresh air and this is a really accomplished film that shows he is a skilled writer/director who has a great eye for theming. 4
Nurse 3D 2013 Horror, Thriller Absolutely dreadful attempt at an erotic thriller as a Nurse starts killing bad people. The lead actress is possibly the worst I have ever seen.It did have a story of sorts and there was a certain amount of style in the way it was filmed, but that's it. 1
Curvature 2017 Mystery, SciFi, Thriller Another low budget time travel thriller where a woman must travel back to understand the death of her late husband (who invented the time machine). Apart from some pretty dodgy acting it was a serviceable attempt, but nothing more. 2.5
Back to the Future: In Concert 1985 Adventure, Comedy, SciFi The live orchestra adds a great air of grandeur to an already fantastic film, though the large number of songs used in the film does make the musicians seem a little redundant at times. By no means the essential way to watch, but a great spectacle anyway. 4.5
The Kid Who Would Be King 2019 Adventure, Family, Fantasy Despite some absolutely dreadful acting from the three male knights, this is still a fun family update of the Arhurian legend. The lad playing young Merlin is amusing and it has a nice little cameo from Patrick Stewart. 3
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers 2002 Adventure, Drama, Fantasy Whilst repeat viewing reveals issues with the special effects that weren't previously as pronounced, the evolution of Gandalf and Sam's characters and the introduction of Gollum go a long way to keeping the pace and papering over these minor cracks. 4
CTRL Z 2017 Comedy, SciFi, Short A hopelessly romantic geek invents a device that allows him to reload his life from a save point and uses it to get the girl. Excellent sci-fi romcom concept test that will hopefully expand into a full feature soon. 4
Our Wife 1931 Comedy, Short Olly is getting married but his bethrothed father doesn't approve. Stanley as best man must help the couple elope. Typical Laurel & Hardy hilarity ensues, but despite the set up it is a little underwhelming. 3
Glass 2019 Drama, SciFi, Thriller M. Night Shyamalam's follow up to Unbreakable and Split is a lot of fun as it mimics Wes Craven's Scream set up by breaking down the superhero genre and using its tropes to drive the film. 4
Belly of the Whale 2018 Comedy, Crime, Drama Irish black comedy about a teen and a broken man who decide to rob an amusement arcade. Poor acting, stilted dialogue and a pedestrian plot made it a big disappointment when compared to other Irish films of its type. 2.5
American Animals 2018 Biopic, Crime, Drama An interesting cross between a documentary and a true drama. The director uses a full movie cast to dramatise the story of an art heist gone wrong, but intersperses it with conversation with the actual robbers and their families. 3.5
You're Darn Tootin' 1928 Comedy, Music, Short Wonderful Laurel & Hardy silent comedy that is worth watching just for the hilarious shin-kicking scene and Stan's collapsable clarinet. 4.5
The Music Box 1932 Comedy, Short Classic Laurel & Hardy as the duo attempt to deliver a piano up a seemingly endless flight of stairs. 4
Block-Heads 1938 Comedy, War Block-Heads is far from my favourite Laurel & Hardy film, but the tale of Stan being left guarding the trenches for 20 years after the war ended has some great gags and physical comedy. 3.5
Welcome to Marwen 2018 Comedy, Drama A really interesting take on mental illness as Steve Carrell deals with being the victim of a hate crime by creating a fantasy world of action figures and dolls. The effects to turn actors into the dolls are fantastic. 3.5
Young Guns II: Blaze of Glory 1990 Action, Western While it's fun to see Estevez reprise his role as Billy the Kid, the rest of the returning cast are just making up numbers while the newcomers don't really stand out and the story is far weaker than the original. 2.5
The Terminator 1984 Action Some of the effects may be dated but that doesn't stop this being the most gripping, relentless Sci-Fi film of all time, with a fantastic story and a performance from Arnie in the iconic title role that shows more acting skill than he gets credit for. 5
What We Do In The Shadows 2013 Comedy, Horror Witty, inventive, gory and sometimes downright absurd, this is without doubt the greatest vampire mockumentary of all time. It may also be the only one, but that doesn't stop it being great entertainment. 3.5
The Disappearance of Alice Creed 2009 Crime, Thriller A well-acted low budget British kidnapping thriller with decent performances from its small cast and plenty of twists to keep you guessing until the end. 3.5
Apollo 13 1995 Drama, Thriller The fabulous acting, special effects and great attention to detail all play their part, but it is to the director's credit that this story is tense and gripping throughout despite you knowing exactly how it is going to turn out. 4
Zoo 2017 Drama, Family Funny, touching and well acted by the mostly young cast, this is a perfectly enjoyable if unremarkable family film with the added interest of being based on a true story. 3
The African Queen 1951 Adventure, Comedy, Romance A wonderful classic, packed with thrills and humour that still work almost 70 years on, with fantastic performances from Bogart and especially Hepburn, whose role as a feisty and resourceful female character is especially noteworthy. 4.5
True Story 2015 Drama Proof that truth isn't always stranger than fiction, as a potentially interesting crime story turns out to be rather dull, despite Hill and Franco both performing fairly well in serious roles. 2.5
Young Guns 1988 Action, Western It's garnished with plenty of 80s cheese as you'd expect from a film with this cast, but has stood up fairly well with ample thrills and some good humour too, while the story is surprisingly faithful to the true events surrounding Billy The Kid. 3.5
The Karate Kid 1984 Action, Drama, Sport Morita is fantastic as Mr Miyagi, Macchio's character has more depth and likeability than your average 80s movie teenager, and overall the film is really enjoyable until the final scene which ends so abruptly it feels like the producers ran out of cash! 3.5
Blade Runner: The Final Cut 1982 Thriller Visually and sonically stunning with top quality acting across the board, but the story is really quite dull until the admittedly brilliant last half hour. Undoubtedly a classic and a top ten film in many eyes, but not mine. 3.5
Rex 2017 Action, Drama It contains the usual tear-jerking moments that you'd expect from any film featuring dogs, but there's also plenty of grit in this real-life story that celebrates the amazing bond between a dog and its master. 3.5
Millions 2004 Comedy, Drama An entertaining mix of whimsical fantasy and a study of our attitude to money. The child actors are great but it would've worked better with less of a spiritual/religious influence. 3.5
Heavy Metal 1981 Animation, Fantasy, SciFi This animated anthology of fantasy sci fi stories suffers from some terrible animation (even for 1981) and even worse writing. If you want some mild cartoon titivation there are better examples from the time. 2
Yardie 2018 Crime, Drama Whilst it adds nothing to the genre, Yardie is a well made gangster tale that introduces us to the Jamaican underworld that is not often seen in film. It also sets up well for a sequel that we will probably never see. 3.5
