MovieViews

The MovieMuse Reviews (MovieViews) database is a searchable collection of films that the team have watched. It provides a link to an in-depth review or a short opinion on the film and a rating, as well as a link to the film’s poster or DVD cover. Over time this will build into a comprehensive guide about what to watch and what to avoid.

You can search and sort the list by individual film names, genre, reviewer, score and other variables to inform you on whether a film is worth your time, or to inspire you for your next movie night.

We will also use the database to create periodic lists of the recommended films in all sorts of categories. These lists will be shared on the website and some will even come with a video.

The Brand New Testament 2015 Comedy, Fantasy, Foreign Language Odd and up-lifting. A delightful tale of living rather than existing. 4.5
The Bourne Legacy 2012 Action, Thriller Whilst Damon's Bournes are personal and about how he deals with the system, this takes the opposite route and looks at the system and how the subjects fit into it. Unfairly marked down by comparison, it is a good film in its own right. 3.5
The Big Short 2015 Biopic, Comedy, Drama The funniest 'factual' film you will ever see. "The truth is like poetry ... and most people fucking hate poetry". 4.5
ARQ 2016 SciFi, Thriller Generic time looper that adds nothing of interest to the genre. 2.5
The Accountant 2016 Action, Crime, Thriller A schizophrenic movie that wants to be Bourne, Rain Man, A Beautiful Mind and a RomCom all at once. 2.5
The Seventh Seal 1957 Drama, Foreign Language, Period Mixes humour, philosophy and beautiful locations with its existential and religious ponderings to create a truly stunning film and one of the most memorable scenes in movie history. 5
Tank 432 2015 Action, Horror, Thriller A tense thriller set in the confines of an abandoned tank. A little too similar to Ben Wheatley’s films, be good all the same. 3
Tango & Cash 1989 Action, Comedy, Crime Over 25 years old and still holds up well with genuinely good humour and action. 3
Swiss Army Man 2016 Adventure, Comedy, Drama A mad, odd, weird and magically wonderful film that proves Daniel Radcliffe's rare quality and brave film choices. 4
Swimming with Sharks 1994 Comedy, Drama One of the most 90s films you will ever see. Spacey is having fun, but is not believable in the role until he becomes the victim. From then on he excels. 4
Swallows and Amazons 2016 Adventure, Family The poor acting and awful script are blown out of the water by the sheer irresponsibility of the plot. 2
Super 2010 Comedy, Crime Click to see our detailed review. 4
Sully 2016 Biopic, Drama A rather pointless biopic that lives in the gap between slightly dull and mildly exciting. 2.5
Suicide Squad 2016 Action, Fantasy, SciFi Click to see our detailed review. 3
Street Kings 2008 Action, Crime A Forrest Whittaker action scene, who saw that coming?? 2.5
Suddenly 1954 Crime, Noir, Thriller A cracking noir, despite a little too much signposting of the plot by today's standards. 3.5
Straight Outta Compton 2015 Biopic, Drama, Music Skips too much of the real story as it ensures that Dre and Cube come off as angels and the manager as the devil. 3.5
Stay Alive 2006 Horror, Thriller Die in the game, die in real life. More like die watching the film and you are saved from watching the rest of the film. 2
Star Wars: The Force Awakens 2015 Adventure, Fantasy, SciFi Click to see our detailed review. 4
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith 2005 Adventure, Fantasy, SciFi Click to see our Box Set review. 3
Star Wars: Attack of the Clones 2002 Adventure, Fantasy, SciFi Click to see our Box Set review. 1.5
Star Trek Generations 1994 Action, Adventure, SciFi Apart from the typical Kirk all-American hero rubbish this is a great cocktail of SciFi fun. 3.5
Star Trek Beyond 2016 Action, Adventure, SciFi Throws everything good from Into Darkness into the bin and instead goes for plotless, mindless action. 2
Special Correspondents 2016 Comedy Too middle of the road to make any waves. A few good lines but Gervais needs to tap into his subversive side much more. 2.5
Spotlight 2015 Biopic, Crime, Drama Interesting and hard hitting, but certainly not entertaining. If a film is going to bring so much reality to the pursuit of justice then they may as well have made a documentary. 3.5
Son of Saul 2016 Drama, Foreign Language, War Harrowing and fantastically told, but not as emotional as you may expect. 4
Snowden 2016 Biopic, Drama, Thriller Overdoes the 'Ed is righteous' and 'Government is evil' but, but tells and interesting (albeit one-sided) account. 3
Sleeper 1973 Comedy, SciFi At some points a masterpiece and others a bore. Half Keystone Cops and half 1984, it doesn't do enough with either to fully excel. 3
Slash 2016 Comedy, Drama Despite its desperation to be edgy and subversive it misses the mark and ends up like an episode of Dawson's Creek at an erotic fan-fiction and cosplay convention. 2
Sing Street 2016 Comedy, Drama, Music Trademark John Carney, but can't hit the heights of Once. Not helped by being unable to connect with the lead character. 3
Silent Running 1972 Adventure, SciFi An engaging tale despite terrible acting, shoddy effects and a bizarre soundtrack. 3
Sightseers 2012 Adventure, Comedy, Crime A dark, funny and surprising film with some amazing scenery and top notch performances. 4
Sicario 2015 Action, Crime, Drama A great first half descends into hysterical girl fights bad good-guys for doing bad things for good reasons. 3
Shenmue The Movie 2001 Adventure, Animation, Drama Made completely from in-game cutscenes, removing the gameplay has also removed everything good about the game. Leaving a shallow story and some awful dialogue. 2
Shooter 2007 Action, Crime, Thriller An exciting, though bog standard thriller. 3
Shade 2003 Crime, Thriller Twists and double crosses are far too obvious, though Stallone excels (and is probably too good for the film). 2.5
Sausage Party 2016 Animation, Comedy Does all it can to degrade the art-form and succeeds. Behind the gratuity is a simple Toy Story rip-off. 2
Sex Lives of the Potato Men 2004 Comedy The shortness of the film is its only saving grace. 2
Sabotage 2014 Action, Crime Poor story and average acting make for a bog standard, middle of the road film hiding behind buckets of blood. 2.5
Rubber 2010 Comedy, Fantasy, Horror A mad genius of a movie. This oddball film would have worked with a human killer, but the fact it is a tyre just adds to the joyous insanity! 4
Room 2015 Drama A simply stunning film that switches from claustrophobic to agoraphobic with effortless ease. 4.5
Ronin 1998 Action, Crime A really good good story with plenty of talking points, but stretched way too thin by over long car chases and poor effects. 3
Romancing the Stone 1984 Action, Adventure, Comedy Douglas is no Harrison Ford, but in the second division of action heroes he does a very good job. 3
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story 2016 Adventure, SciFi, War Click to see our detailed review. 3
Red Road 2006 Drama, Thriller Masterfully told drama that tells a very simple plot in a very British and very good way. 4.5
Reach Me 2014 Drama Stallone is good but he seems to be in a gritty drama whilst the rest of the cast are in a TV comedy. 2
Re-Animator 1985 Horror Click to see our Film Club review. 3.5
Ratchet & Clank 2016 Adventure, Animation, Family, SciFi The visuals are no better than the ingame cutscenes and script has little to offer either. You are better off just playing the first Ratchet game (or the PS4 remake). 2.5
Raiders of the Lost Ark 1981 Action, Adventure Click to see our Box Set review. 4
Primer 2004 Drama, SciFi, Thriller A little too clever for its own good and a lack of real tension or threat, but there is enough to keep your head scratching for some time after the film has completed. 3.5
