MovieViews

The MovieMuse Reviews (MovieViews) database is a searchable collection of films that the team have watched, providing a comprehensive guide on what to watch and what to avoid. It provides a link to an in-depth review or a short opinion on the film and a rating, as well as a link to the film’s poster or DVD cover. For more recent entries we are also including a link to the film’s IMDb page and a trailer from YouTube.

You can search and sort the list by individual film names, genre, reviewer, score and other variables to inform you on whether a film is worth your time, or to inspire you for your next movie night.

We will also use the database to create periodic lists of the recommended films in all sorts of categories. These lists will be shared on the website and some will even come with a video.

The Last Samurai 2003 Action, 7, 15 Despite being another 'white saviour' movie, Tom Cruise's transformation from US Army officer to Samurai Warrior is respectful and thrilling. 8
Apocalypto 2006 Action, 1, 7 Mel Gibson's Mayan adventure has all the beauty and brutality you would expect of an ancient civilisation, all wrapped up in a thrilling film that evokes biblical epics and most surprisingly, classic chase movies! 9
Brothers in Arms 2016 Action, 10, 21 A very modern war film sees Turkish Special Forces fighting ISIS to free a journalist and protect a village. Astounding action and direction on a budget 1/100th of a comparable Hollywood movie. 8
The Likely Lads 1976 4 The classic sitcom goes on a road trip. A very fitting end for the iconic characters in a farewell film where Terry finally gets his own back on Bob. 7
GoldenEye 1995 Action, 1, 20 Whilst it is undeniably a fun caper, by today's standards Pierce Brosnan's first outing as James Bond is as cheesy and ludicrous as they come, with pantomime performances to go with the script. 6
Scoob! 2020 1, 2, 4 Despite a really dreadful first half hour, Scoob! eventually morphs into a fun adventure that drags a number of other Hanna Barbera characters along for the ride. The new art style is excellent, so a sequel will be welcome. 6
Happy Feet 2006 1, 2, 4 An interesting and engaging tale of finding your inner voice (or dance). But the comedy is hit and miss and the riffs off classic tunes are patchy at best. 6
Deadfall 2012 5, 7, 20 If you can get past Eric Bana's deep south accent then this is a passable but not exactly ground breaking man hunt with a slightly disturbing incest element. 6
Lone Survivor 2013 Action, 3, 21 Whilst there is plenty of well shot action in Mark Wahlberg's America vs The Taliban true story, I found the acting and the storytelling too blunt, meaning my interest waned before the overly sentimental end. 6
21 Bridges 2019 Action, 5, 20 There is nothing new in this Manhattan dirty cop thriller. But what it does, it does in an exciting and an entertaining way. 7
Force of Nature 2020 Action, 5, 20 Second rate in every conceivable way. Mel Gibson pantomimes his small part in a heist in a hurricane movie that is more like a storm in a tea-cup. 3
Tomorrowland 2015 1, 17 The influence of classic 50s Sci-Fi is welcome and the premise is quite dark for a Disney offering, but while the acting and effects are good, the film spends so long setting up the tale that it runs out of steam before it gets going properly. 7
What Happened to Monday 2017 Action, 17, 20 Like many Netflix offerings the premise is better than the delivery, but this is a reasonable dystopian thriller with some good action scenes. Noomi Rapace overacts at times but is good value playing seven different roles, while Glenn Close is just awful! 6
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Extended) 2003 Action, 1, 9 The epic conclusion to the story is fleshed out even more in this edition, and while it definitely has a few too many endings, the additional scenes add more depth, relevance and emotional value to an already fantastic movie. 9
Zodiac 2007 5, 20 An intriguing, sometimes gripping, often frustrating true crime tale with some great acting performances and brilliant 70s-style production design. It would be all the better were it not so excruciatingly long! 7
The Bourne Ultimatum 2007 Action, 20 Story-wise there's not a lot happening in the final part of the original Bourne trilogy, but the action is non-stop from beginning to end in a film that is both gripping and exhausting to watch. 7
The Wind That Shakes The Barley 2006 7, 15, 21 Cillian Murphy is great as a member of the Irish Republican Army fighting for freedom from British rule. With echoes of Land and Freedom, the dialogue is even more gripping than the action. 8
Green Lantern 2011 Action, 1, 17 Basing a film on the worst superhero in fandom is a bad start. The poor script, bad acting and terrible CG effects just exacerbate the film's problems. 5
Black Jack 1979 1, 7 Despite being ostensibly a children's tale about a young boy in the 1700s who meets an unusually big and strong French man and a runaway girl from an institution, it bears all the social and political hallmarks of a Ken Loach film. Low budget, big heart. 6
Another Sunday and Sweet F.A. 1972 4, 7, 19 Jack Rosenthal's play about a jobsworth referee, a bitter groundsman, disaffected players and a handful of bored fans at a Sunday league football match. Funny throughout, but it is the wonderful end that makes it endure. 8
Looks and Smiles 1981 7 Loach takes another swipe at Thatcher's Britain and the hopelessness of youth. Based on the novel by Kes author Barry Hines, it is a great window into early 80s life though doesn't quite grip you . 7
Family Life 1971 7 Overbearing parents and a forced abortion push a fragile girl to the edge. in a portrait of mental health in the 1970s. Ken Loach has crafted a drama that is far more terrifying than any horror film the period had to offer. 10
Land and Freedom 1995 7, 21 A superb look at the Spanish socialist uprising of 1936, as an Englishman joins an international militia in its fight against Franco's fascists. Perfectly captures the pain of war and why the good guys don't always win. 9
Carla's Song 1996 7, 16 When a Scottish bus driver falls for a Nicaraguan woman, he travels to her homeland to help her find her family. Out of his depth, he finds the true horror of war but also the warmth and generosity of the Nicaraguan people. 7
Fatherland 1986 7, 10 Despite Loach saying this was 'a mess of a film', the tale of a protest singer exiled from East Germany and his experience of the West is both intriguing and interesting whilst engaging debates on capitalism, socialism and history. 8
