The MovieMuse Reviews (MovieViews) database is a searchable collection of films that the team have watched. It provides a link to an in-depth review or a short opinion on the film and a rating, as well as a link to the film’s poster or DVD cover. Over time this will build into a comprehensive guide about what to watch and what to avoid.

You can search and sort the list by individual film names, genre, reviewer, score and other variables to inform you on whether a film is worth your time, or to inspire you for your next movie night.

We will also use the database to create periodic lists of the recommended films in all sorts of categories. These lists will be shared on the website and some will even come with a video.

Lifted 2006 Animation, Short An Alien takes his abduction driving test. Nicely animated, but doesn't have the character, humour or charm of other Pixar shorts. 2.5
Mater and the Ghost Light 2006 Animation, Short Ghost Light is a great advert for the Cars films as all of the residents of Radiator Springs are on display, but the story is a little weak and maybe even a little too long. 3.5
Jack-Jack Attack 2005 Animation, Short The best of the shorts based on full Pixar movies, Jack-Jack has great characters and a nice self contained Incredibles plot. 4
One Man Band 2005 Animation, Short Two one-man-bands compete for a coin destined for the wishing well. Some ingenious contraptions and a nice ending, but there is nothing new on offer. 3
A Fantastic Woman 2017 Drama, Foreign Language Chilean film about a mistress who suffers prejudice and intimidation when her married boyfriend dies. There is a major plot twist that is revealed early on and the film holds your interest from then on. 3.5
Lies We Tell 2017 Drama, Thriller Despite the disingenuous plastering of Harvey Keitel on the poster and the director playing Bradford landmark bingo, Lies is a safe but presentable cross-culture thriller. 3
Ferdinand 2018 Animation, Comedy, Family An amusing and family friendly slice of animal rights and non-violent protest activism. 3.5
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 2002 Adventure, Fantasy Even longer than its predecessor, and unnecessarily so, but generally the children’s' acting has improved and this is probably the funniest of the series thanks to great performances from Kenneth Branagh and Rupert Grint. 3
Idiocracy 2006 Comedy, SciFi A very clever idea that is alarmingly prophetic, but after an entertaining first 15 minutes it doesn’t know where to go and ends up being more irritating than funny. 2.5
Jurassic Park III 2001 Adventure, Thriller The story is silly, the characters are mostly dumb and the humour is often cringeworthy, but this is still a lot more fun than the second film and the dinosaurs are as good as ever. 3
Rise of the Planet of the Apes 2011 SciFi, Thriller A rare exception of a franchise reboot that works, this is a clever and intense thriller with great mo-cap CGI performances and action. However, the touching story that underpins the film is what sets this apart from the normal big studio offerings. 4
The Adventures of Andre and Wally B. 1984 Animation, Short Little more than a tech demo, and the CG animation looks very crude by modern standards. A key moment in the genesis of Pixar, but nothing more. 1.5
Luxo Jr. 1986 Animation, Short The Pixar journey begins properly with their now-iconic lamp character. The animation is brilliant for the era and the simple story oozes wit and character. A quite remarkable start. 4
Red's Dream 1987 Animation, Short Another traditionally inanimate object is imbued with personality, and while it isn't as appealing as Luxo Jr, the quality of animation again takes some significant strides. 3.5
Tin Toy 1988 Animation, Short While its significance in the development of Toy Story is obvious, this is the weakest of the early Pixar shorts, with a dull story and some rather ugly characters. 2.5
Knick Knack 1989 Animation, Short The last of the Pixar shorts before the company started work on Toy Story, and the best in terms of storytelling, humour and an engaging character. A classic slapstick cartoon with cutting-edge visuals for the time. 4
Geri's Game 1997 Animation, Short The story is clever and the animation is impressive, but for some reason I'm just not a fan of this Pixar short, possibly due to the rather sad situation that the main character is in. 3
For the Birds 2000 Animation, Short Animation-wise this was pushing the boundaries of the medium, and the bird characters are cute and amusing, but story-wise it is rather lacking. 3
Mike's New Car 2002 Animation, Short The Pixar shorts that feature characters from their full-length films have always seemed a bit pointless, and that is very much the case here, with a fairly generic story and nothing new from the characters. 2.5
Boundin' 2003 Animation, Short Probably one of the best Pixar shorts in terms of having a nice moral to the story, but the characters are weird and unappealing and I'm not a fan of the musical delivery in this case. 2.5
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone 2001 Adventure, Fantasy Way too long for a kids' fantasy film, with some occasionally dreadful acting and a damp squib of an ending. That said, it's still a decent introduction to the cinematic world of Harry Potter. 3
I am Not a Witch 2017 Drama A wonderful satire of the Zambian government's treatment of women accused of witchcraft. Funny and thought provoking with some fantastic visuals. 4
Mudbound 2017 Drama The lives of two very different farming families in 1940s Mississippi. The story is a little too long but is told well through some strong performances. 3.5
On Body and Soul 2017 Drama, Foreign Language, Romance A gentle study of crippling introversion and self image that juxtaposes a charming relationship with the brutality of a slaughterhouse. 4
Please Stand By 2017 Comedy, Drama A well-meaning but ultimately poor attempt at autism awareness that comes across as twee and trite in all the places it tries to be emotional. 2
