MovieViews

The MovieMuse Reviews (MovieViews) database is a searchable collection of films that the team have watched. It provides a link to an in-depth review or a short opinion on the film and a rating, as well as a link to the film’s poster or DVD cover. Over time this will build into a comprehensive guide about what to watch and what to avoid.

You can search and sort the list by individual film names, genre, reviewer, score and other variables to inform you on whether a film is worth your time, or to inspire you for your next movie night.

We will also use the database to create periodic lists of the recommended films in all sorts of categories. These lists will be shared on the website and some will even come with a video.

Miller's Crossing 1990 Crime, Drama, Thriller A talky mob film is a pleasant surprise and the script will keep you entertained when the direction falters. 3.5
Midnight Special 2016 Adventure, Drama, Mystery Despite some awful child acting and a horribly fluffy ending, I like the film more than I wanted to. Has a great score too. 3
Midnight Cowboy 1969 Drama Superb performances, but the haphazard direction stops it being a true classic. 4
Mean Girls 2004 Comedy Trite, stereotypical and often insulting to the viewers intelligence. God help us if the rumoured sequel sees the light of day. 2
Mascots 2016 Comedy Christopher Guest’s least subtle but most endearing ‘mockumentary’ yet. O’Dowd’s fake Irish accent is a bit off putting though, especially as he is actually Irish. 3.5
Marvellous 2014 Biopic, Drama A heartwarming tale that uses real people and archive footage to emphasise that however remarkable the story may seem, it is in fact true. 4
Marauders 2016 Action, Crime, Thriller Run of the mill bank job with a terribly out of place Bruce Willis. 2.5
Maggie 2015 Drama, Horror A very different take on the zombie genre. Focuses on how the infected live rather than what happens when they die. Arnie is superb and should take on more of these understated roles. 4
Magnificent 7 2016 Action, Adventure, Western Despite being in the vast wilderness of the wild west the film seems to struggle with scale, coming off as a much smaller film than the original. 2.5
Made 2001 Comedy, Crime, Drama Favreau and Vaughan doing what they do. Could be Swingers: 10 Years Later. 3.5
Mad Max: Fury Road 2015 Action, Adventure, SciFi Click to see our detailed review. 4
Long Kiss Goodnight 1996 Action, Comedy The film has more cheese than necessary and Gena Davis is beyond poor, but there is enough action and excitement to make it worthwhile. 2.5
Look Who's Back 2015 Comedy, Drama, Foreign Language This faux-documentary about Hitler returning to modern day Germany is almost too real and is all the more terrifying for it. 4
London Town 2016 Drama, Music A childish film trying to exist in an adult world and fails miserably. 1.5
London Has Fallen 2016 Action, Crime The tagline (Prepare For Bloody Hell) is the best thing about the film. After the surprising delight of Olympus, London is a let down in all possible ways. 1.5
Level Up 2016 Thriller Other films have done the story much better. Nothing to do with video games despite marketing to the contrary. 2
Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World 2016 Documentary Interesting and contained a few things that I hadn't heard before, but I don't feel I learned anything. 3
Let's Be Evil 2016 Horror, SciFi, Thriller High production values, but a story that ultimately goes nowhere. There is definite tension but nothing ever comes of it. 2
A Christmas Carol 1984 Drama, Family, Fantasy One of the definitive tellings of a well known tale. Tiny Tim is annoying though! 3.5
A Field in England 2013 Drama, Horror, Period Some arty scenes made me want to dislike the film but somehow I couldn't. The black and white cinematography was unnecessary, but the dialogue and drama were superb. 4
10 Cloverfield Lane 2016 Drama, Mystery, Thriller The shoe-horning of Cloverfield into what is a brilliant film in its own right is pretty shameless. But despite that it is still a must see. 4
45 Years 2015 Drama A tale of keeping a secret for a very long time. there is far less to the film than the premise suggests. Saved by fine performances by the leads. 3.5
The Dinner Game (Le Diner de Cons) 1998 Comedy, Foreign Language An enjoyable but pretty standard farce that would have benefitted from showing the titular dinner itself rather than just the build up. 3
Kubo and the Two Strings 2016 Adventure, Animation, Family, Fantasy A great story made all the better by a talking monkey and beetle, though I don't buy the point of claymation when you are going to meld it with CGI. 4
Kitchen Stories 2003 Comedy, Drama, Foreign Language Odd, slow, thoughtful, beautiful, brilliant. 4
Kindergarten Cop 2 2016 Comedy Does everything the first film does, just not as well. 2
Kill Your Friends 2015 Comedy, Crime, Thriller Self indulgent and self important. A bit like the A&R men it portrays. 2.5
Kill List 2011 Crime, Horror, Thriller A 720 degree headfuck. Could be genius or could be madness. I have no idea which, but I liked it! 3.5
KiDULTHOOD 2006 Crime, Drama A frighteningly authenic look at urban Britain with some great cebtral performances. 3.5
Kicking Off 2015 Comedy Ends a very different film to the one that started. Think Edgar Wright on a budget. 3.5
Key Largo 1948 Crime, Drama, Noir Click to see our Film Club review. 3.5
Keanu 2016 Action, Comedy Buddy film about two good guys with an nhealthy obsession with George Michael acting bad to rescue a kitten. Sounds awful but works surprisingly well. 4
K-Shop 2016 Horror, Thriller An unexpected indictment of binge drinking Britain dressed up as a Sweeny Todd for the millenial generation. One of those films that you want everyone to see. 4
Judge Dredd 1995 Action, Crime, SciFi Looks dated even for a 90s movie, but the camp and cartoony fun is all the simple plot needed. 3
Joysticks 1983 Comedy Awful racial and social stereotyping and bereft of humour. Nowhere near its contemporaries (like Revenge of the Nerds) and not even worth watching to geek out on the old arcade games. 1.5
Joy 2015 Biopic, Drama Dreary TV movie dressed up as cinema. Poor acting throughout and an absolute mystery how it became oscar nominated. The film appears as fake as the QVC sellers peddling Joy's wares. 2
Jimmy Vestvood 2016 Adventure, Comedy The 'all foreigners are terrorists' and 'America loves a good war (for commercial gain)' rhetoric feels bang on, but does get a little tiresome by the end. A nice slapstick comedy. 3
The Jewel of the Nile 1985 Action, Adventure, Comedy A moderately entertaining sequel to Romancing the Stone that just doesn't pack the punch of its predecessor. 2.5
Jason Bourne 2016 Action, Thriller Fun and entertaining, but the unusually poor script and set pieces too often spoil the flow. 3
Jackie Chan's Project A 1983 Action, Comedy Click to see our Film Club review. 3.5
Japan Sinks 2006 Adventure, Drama, SciFi Focuses a little too much on the people and not the action, making for a slightly dull affair. 2.5
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit 2014 Action, Thriller Generic spy-action thriller set in the US and Russia but with an almost entirely British cast?? 2.5
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back 2016 Action, Adventure, Crime Some brilliantly brutal fight scenes elevate a very average script. 2.5
Into the Wild 2007 Adventure, Biopic, Drama The desire for a free life is infectious, but the film fails spectacularly in showing the risk and danger of living in the wild. Though it is still great to see a film championing the odd people on the outside of 'normal' life. 3
Inside Man 2006 Crime, Drama, Mystery An interesting twist, but just a little too generic. 3.5
Inside Llewyn Davis 2013 Drama, Music Oscar Isaac is excellent as the temperamental folk singer questioning his art. 4
Infiltrator 2016 Biopic, Crime, Drama Despite playing his part well, Cranston is horribly miscast and the film plods along to a pretty unsatisfactory conclusion. 2.5
Inferno 2016 Adventure, Drama, Thriller Inferno displays everything that is wrong with big budget thrillers. Ageing 'named' lead actors who can't keep up with the action, overused and unnecessary CGI and a myriad of twists that are all so signposted they just prolong the agony. 1.5
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 1984 Action, Adventure Click to see our Box Set review. 3
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull 2008 Action, Adventure Click to see our Box Set review. 2
