MovieViews

The MovieMuse Reviews (MovieViews) database is a searchable collection of films that the team have watched. It provides a link to an in-depth review or a short opinion on the film and a rating, as well as a link to the film’s poster or DVD cover. Over time this will build into a comprehensive guide about what to watch and what to avoid.

You can search and sort the list by individual film names, genre, reviewer, score and other variables to inform you on whether a film is worth your time, or to inspire you for your next movie night.

We will also use the database to create periodic lists of the recommended films in all sorts of categories. These lists will be shared on the website and some will even come with a video.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier 2014 Action, Fantasy, SciFi Not quite a match for The FirstAvenger as the Cap and Bucky bromance feels misplaced. 3.5
Captain America: The First Avenger 2011 Action, Fantasy, SciFi Way too long but does an excellent job in making the backstory of one of Marvel's dullest characters exciting. 4
Cafe Society 2016 Comedy, Drama, Period Eisenberg makes a great Woody Allen mini-me, but the film feels all to safe. 3
Capone 1975 Biopic, Crime, Drama Generic gangster fare that doesn't seem to know what its goal is. Dishonest in its modern marketing as a Stallone film. 2.5
Cactus Jack 1979 Comedy, Western Wile E Coyote crossed with a Carry On film. 2
Bullet to the Head 2012 Action Plays out like a violent twist on Tango & Cash. 3
BrOTHERHOOD 2016 Crime, Drama, Thriller A good end to the trilogy with some touching and funny moments, but Clarke is ultimately too comfortable for a role like this. 3.5
Brighton Rock 1947 Crime, Drama, Noir, Thriller Brilliant lead performances and a fantastically believable, but tragically doomed relationship between Pinky and Rose make for a heart wrenching end to a brilliant British noir thriller. 4
Brooklyn 2015 Drama, Romance A nice and gentle tale that is beautifully shot and features great supporting performances from Julie Walters and Jim Broadbent. 4
Bridge of Spies 2015 Period, Thriller A little too 'Speilbergy' for my liking, but a great performance from Rylance and an interesting and unusual spy story. 3.5
Boy and the World 2013 Adventure, Animation, Fantasy, Foreign Language Amazing animation, but it feels like a tech demo rather than a thought through film and I tired of the story early. 2.5
Breach 2007 Biopic, Crime, Drama I sat waiting for a twist that never came, but it still tells a believable tale of twisted internal affairs. 3
Bottle Rocket 1996 Comedy, Crime Click here for our Film Club review. 3
Bone Tomahawk 2015 Adventure, Horror, Western Brutal from the very first scene. Doesn't have the sheen of Hateful 8, but is all the better for it. 4
Blade Runner (Final Cut) 1982 Noir, SciFi, Thriller The definitive version of a stunningly beautiful film that is virtually a work of art. Even the sound is art. The soundtrack, the dialogue, the visuals and the acting are one of a kind. This is closest to Scott's true vision as we will get. 5
Black Mass 2015 Crime, Drama Tries to paint a picture of a killer without really getting inside his head. Depp's performance and the story/legend deserve a better movie. 3
The Take (Bastille Day) 2016 Action, Thriller Enjoyable action film with one of the worst end credits songs in history. Idris, put down the mic! 3
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 2016 Action, Fantasy, SciFi The film was slow without Snyder's over-use of the slo-mo and almost certainly ends his ownership of the Superman movies. 2.5
Beasts of No Nation 2015 Drama, War The young lead is brilliant but many of the accents are hard to understand and this can detract from an excellent portrayal of the brutality and futility of war. 4
Basic 2003 Action, Crime Despite its A-list cast, the film is exactly what it says on the tin. 2.5
Avengers: Age of Ultron 2015 Action, Fantasy, SciFi Click to see our detailed review. 3
The Avengers 2012 Action, Fantasy, SciFi The Avengers exploded onto our screens to breathe new life into the Marvel universe. And boy did we need it! 4
Attack the Block 2011 Action, Comedy, SciFi Brilliant British take on the Sci-Fi action comedy.Great effects and spot on humour. 4
Assault on Precinct 13 (2005) 2005 Action, Crime, Thriller Loses all of the tension and grit of the original to deliver a run of the mill cop thriller. 2.5
Assault on Precinct 13 1976 Action, Crime, Thriller A tense and stylish twist on the ‘storm the fort’ western. 4
Arrival 2016 Drama, Mystery, SciFi, Thriller Intelligent and very well made sci-fi mystery that just saves itself from the over sentimentality. 4
Arthur Christmas 2011 Adventure, Animation, Comedy Run of the mill Christmas tale, but has some wonderful characters and comedy moments. 3.5
Assassin's Creed 2016 Action, Adventure, Fantasy The effects, acting and set pieces are all fine, but are let down horribly by a truly dreadful story that loses everything that made the games good. 2.5
Army of One 2016 Adventure, Comedy Deliberately stupid with a cheesy voice over, but Cage's performance and a huge amount of heart win you over. 3
Anthrapoid 2016 Biopic, Thriller Proof that not all heroic true tales are exciting. Or particularly interesting. 2.5
Ant-Man 2015 Action, Adventure, Comedy, SciFi An amazing model city scene and some great humour, but not quite the all round super film. Ant Man 2 could be great though. 3
Anomalisa 2015 Animation, Comedy, Drama You've never seen a more real and touching sex scene that the one between two puppets in this film! 4.5
Amy 2015 Documentary Whilst it offers small glimpes of insight, it is a documentary by numbers that avoids any level of detail. 2.5
American Ultra 2015 Action, Comedy, SciFi Like a feature length episode of Chuck with all the jokes removed and replaced by gore. 2
American History X 1998 Crime, Drama Brutal start and slow thoughtful end doesn't make for the best entertainment, but it serves the narrative far more. A little too convenient in places, but hits hard enough when needed and has some great performances from its leads. 4
America 3000 1986 Action, Adventure, SciFi An entertaining and well made b-movie that follows all the standard tropes, but is no worse for it. 3
Aliens 1986 Action, Horror, SciFi Click to see our Box Set review. 4
Alien Resurrection 1997 Action, Horror, SciFi Click to see our Box Set review. 2.5
Algorithm 2014 Thriller Either a good student project or a poor professional release. You decide. 2
Alien 3 1992 Action, Horror, SciFi Click to see our Box Set review. 3
AdULTHOOD 2008 Crime, Drama More heart and smoother direction than KiDULTHOOD, but just as gritty, violent and real. 4
Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie 2016 Comedy A blatant vanity project for Jennifer Saunders with very little genuine entertainment. 2
A United Kingdom 2016 Biopic, Drama, Romance Not as hard hitting as I’d hoped, but an important story told very well (if not entirely truthfully). 4
The Legend of Tarzan 2016 Action, Adventure OK on almost all fronts but not better. Margo Robbie and the film's end were disappointing though. 3
The Lobster 2015 Comedy, Drama An interesting premise turned into an unlikable film due to some apparently deliberate bad acting. Somehow left me wanting to watch it again though?? 3
The Long Good Friday 1980 Crime, Drama Aged but stylish Brit gangster flick. Perfect for playing 'spot the TV actor', but has a misplaced Carpenter-esque soundtrack. 3
The Lords of Flatbush 1974 Drama, Romance Like a Happy Days spin off without the Cunningams. The film that started the Stallone/Gere fued. 3
The Martian 2015 Adventure, SciFi At its best when it is just Damon and the camera, so the start and end are a bit flat. Some odd secondary casting too. 3.5
The Ones Below 2015 Drama, Thriller The slow first two thirds makes the final act all the more impactful. But you may not stick around long enough to see it. 3.5
The Program 2015 Biopic, Sport The cycling is well shot, but the film is let down by poor acting and direction. 2.5
