MovieViews

The MovieMuse Reviews (MovieViews) database is a searchable collection of films that the team have watched. It provides a link to an in-depth review or a short opinion on the film and a rating, as well as a link to the film’s poster or DVD cover. Over time this will build into a comprehensive guide about what to watch and what to avoid.

You can search and sort the list by individual film names, genre, reviewer, score and other variables to inform you on whether a film is worth your time, or to inspire you for your next movie night.

We will also use the database to create periodic lists of the recommended films in all sorts of categories. These lists will be shared on the website and some will even come with a video.

Independence Day Resurgence 2016 Action, Adventure, SciFi Inane script, awful acting, bad modelling, terrible score. And those are its good oints. Almost no redeeming qualities whatsoever. A lesson in how to kill a franchise. 1.5
In a Valley of Violence 2016 Action, Western Part ‘First Blood in the wild west’ and part animal talent show. Almost pulls it off. 3
If Cats Disappeared from the World 2016 Drama, Fantasy, Foreign Language Beautifully shot and expertly told tale of love, loss, life and death. 4
Imperium 2016 Crime, Drama, Thriller A decent enough telling of a true tale, though Radcliffe's transformation from weedy geek to white supremacist is all a little too easy. 3
I, Daniel Blake 2016 Drama Will make you laugh, cry and rage about the hypocrisy and bureaucracy of the welfare state. 4.5
I Robot 2004 Action, SciFi A bit too 'set-piecey' in places, but Smith is great in a slightly more serious role but the Audi product placement gets a bit incredulous. 3.5
I am Not a Serial Killer 2016 Drama, Horror, Thriller Its low budget, slow pacing and supernatural twist detract from a great performance by Christopher Lloyd. 2.5
Hunt for the Wilderpeople 2016 Adventure, Comedy, Drama Sam Neill’s best performance since Jurassic park and full of the kind of wacky humour than only the Ozzies and the Nozzies can make. 4.5
Hush 2016 Horror, Thriller A good premise that fails to live up to its promise, but remains entertaining throughout. 3
Homefront 2013 Action Stallone wrote the screenplay but I am glad he handed the role to Statham as it suits him perfectly. 3.5
Hollywoodland 2006 Biopic, Crime, Drama Very interesting melodrama about the death of George Reeves. Presents 3 possible conclusions and lets you make up your own mind. 3.5
High Fidelity 2000 Comedy, Music A standard rom-com that is desperate to be seen as more. Fun and has a few stand out laughs, but just not enough. 3
High-Rise 2016 Drama Style over sense that suggests that Ballard's book should be left alone by the movie industry. 2.5
Hello My Name is Doris 2015 Comedy, Drama, Romance Pleasant and harmless tale of old lost soul falling for young free spirit. 3
Hell or High Water 2016 Crime, Drama, Western A modern day western that is slower than a summer Sunday in Texas. In a good way. 4
The Hateful Eight 2015 Adventure, Drama, Mystery Click to see our detailed review. 3.5
Hardcore Henry 2016 Action, SciFi Click to see our detailed review. 1.3
Hard Tide 2015 Drama, Thriller The low budget and poor acting don't ruin a nice British thriller with a great soundtrack. 3
Hail, Caesar! 2016 Comedy, Mystery, Period The Coen's love letter to Hollywood. A caricature of classic cinema done in a respectful way 4.5
Grudge match Comedy, Sport funny, well acted and has some great nods to classic boxing films. The meat locker seen is genius. It is a shame that reviewers fixated on comparing the film to Rocky and Raging Bull rather than enjoying the film for what it is. 4
Grimsby 2016 Action, Comedy A pathetically weak script and cringeworthy 'big' jokes are made almost watchable by high production values and exciting action sequences. 2
Green Room 2016 Crime, Horror, Thriller A crocodile of a movie. Long periods of calm punctuated with violent bursts of energy. Beautifully shot and sickeningly gruesome. 4
Gone Baby Gone 2007 Crime, Mystery Some early indications of Affleck's directing flair, but the screenplay is lacking. 3.5
Friday 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan 1989 Horror Not scary, thrilling, funny, entertaining fun. But more importantly it isn't even in Manhattan! 1.5
Frank and Lola 2016 Drama, Noir Well acted and presented relationship drama, but also pretty eventless. 3.5
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2016 Adventure, Family, Fantasy A weak first hour, but it all comes together in the second. The plot is far too X-Men for my liking. 3.5
Eye in the Sky 2016 Drama, Thriller, War It is inconceivable that things would go down the way the film presents, but as entertaining theatre it is a thrilling adventure with many moral questions. 3.5
Exam 2009 Mystery, Thriller An interesting concept that for the most part work well, but are spoiled a little by a silly end. 3
Exposed 2016 Crime, Drama, Mystery, Thriller Dreadfully slow supernatural thriller that leaves no satisfaction when it is over. A poor man's M Night Shyamalam. 2.5
Evidence of Blood 1998 Drama, Mystery, Thriller Decent TV movie that would be better without the unnecessary last 30 minutes of melodrama. 2.5
Equity 2016 Drama An interesting corporate drama in places and no better than a Hallmark special in others. 2.5
Everybody Wants Some 2016 Comedy Funny and well staged but ultimately pointless view into the world of jocks being jocks. 4
Elle 2016 Drama, Foreign Language, Thriller Despite how messed up and destructive her life gets, everything that Elle does is believable and almost understandable. 4
Edge of Tommorow 2014 Action, SciFi Some stupidly large plot holes and a terrible end, but otherwise it is a lot of fun watching Tom Cruise die over and over again. 3.5
Eden 2015 Drama, Thriller Woeful acting gives way to a predictable but enjoyable Lord of the Flies adventure. 3
Eddie the Eagle 2016 Biopic, Comedy, Drama Click to see our detailed review. 4
Drinking Buddies 2013 Comedy, Drama, Romance A pleasantly told story of likeable characters with likeable traits. 3.5
Double Dragon 1994 Action, Adventure, Comedy Awful story bearing little resemblance to the games (which is a pity as the story to the first game is pretty good). The fight choreography is pretty laughable for the most part, which is a killer for a martial arts movie. 2
Down Terrace 2009 Comedy, Crime, Drama A family relatonship drama with a difference, told through great character development and minimal plot. 3.5
Dr. No 1962 Action, Adventure, Thriller By today's standards the effects and sets are awful. But for a 50 year old film they present a great insight into how people in the 60s imagined the future. 3
Doom 2005 Action, Horror A poor mans Aliens that brings nothing new and none of the spirit from the game. 2.5
Don't Breathe 2016 Crime, Horror, Thriller It's relentless thrill and threat seems to be coming to a conclusion at the halfway point but then doesn't let up for another 40 minutes. 4
Demolition 2015 Drama It was hard work to get into the film about dealing with grief (or not), but by halfway I was sold by the interesting characters. 3.5
Doctor Strange 2016 Action, Adventure, Fantasy, SciFi A perfectly functional blend of Batman Begins, The Matrix and Ghostbusters 2. 3.5
Dog Eat Dog 2016 Comedy, Thriller Tries so hard to be edgy that it comes off as desperate. Dafoe is superb though. 2
Deadpool 2016 Action, Comedy, Fantasy, SciFi Click to see our detailed review. 3.5
Dear White People 2014 Comedy, Drama Funny, witty and midly thought provoking, it is a film that ultimately isn't as daring or revolutionary as it wants to be. 3
