MovieViews

The MovieMuse Reviews (MovieViews) database is a searchable collection of films that the team have watched. It provides a link to an in-depth review or a short opinion on the film and a rating, as well as a link to the film’s poster or DVD cover. Over time this will build into a comprehensive guide about what to watch and what to avoid.

You can search and sort the list by individual film names, genre, reviewer, score and other variables to inform you on whether a film is worth your time, or to inspire you for your next movie night.

We will also use the database to create periodic lists of the recommended films in all sorts of categories. These lists will be shared on the website and some will even come with a video.

God's Own Country 2017 Drama, Romance Despite a slightly ropey lead performance, Francis Lee's writing and directorial debut is a beautiful tale of love, self destruction and redemption in the wilds of Yorkshire. Brokeback Mountain for the real world. 4
Kingdom of Us 2017 Documentary, Drama The most heart wrenching documentary I have ever seen. Depression and grief laid bare by a family of six, reeling from the suicide of the father. All six have their own story and each one is beautiful. 4.5
Last men in Aleppo 2017 Documentary, Foreign Language, War A harrowing film about the struggles of the white helmets, a group of civilian rescue teams who search the rubble of bomb sights to find survivors in the city of Aleppo, Syria. Expertly shows how war can all of a sudden become normality. 3.5
Icarus 2017 Documentary, Sport, Thriller A fascinating documentary of two halves. Starting as an expose into beating drug tests in cycling, it ends up a thriller about the Russian state sponsored doping regime. 4.5
Final Portrait 2017 Biopic, Drama A gentle and often funny portrayal of a 2 hour portrait sitting that ended up lasting around three weeks. If not for misconduct allegations, Geoffrey Rush would surely have been up for awards for his portrayal of Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti. 3
Mom and Dad 2017 Comedy, Horror Even for Nic Cage this is one messed up film! Two kids fight to stay alive as a mysterious wave of parents killing their offspring hits town. Funny, sick and damn good fun! 3.5
Murder on the Orient Express 2017 Crime, Drama, Mystery Whilst lavish and star-studded, the film relies a little to much on its casts pulling power, but still manages to deliver a fine, if not especially outstanding, interpretation of Agatha Christie's classic. 3.5
All the Money in the World 2017 Biopic, Crime, Drama A disappointingly thrill-less thriller whose sole purpose seems to be to tell the viewer how much the richest man in the world loves money. Ridley Scott is still searching for his redemption film. 2.5
City of Ghosts 2017 Documentary Fascinating story of a brave group of amateur journalists and their fight to tell the world of the suffering in Raqqa, Syria. Not just their home town, but also claimed as the capital of the ISIS caliphate. Both graphic and incredibly personal. 4
I Am Not Your Negro 2016 Documentary An enthralling interpretation of James Baldwin's strong words on how racism has changed and yet stayed the same across America. A film that is all too relevant 50 years on from the murders of Martin Luther King, Malcom X and Medgar Evers. 3.5
An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power 2017 Documentary Al Gore's difficult 2nd album suffers from too much filler and not enough bangers. But the arrival of a new villain in Donald Trump towards the end sets up what could be a fascinating final act to the trilogy. 3
Darkest Hour 2017 Biopic, Drama, Period An amazing performance from Oldman and a wonderful tale of an unliked man letting nothing stand in the way of greatness. Shows the heart of the man without shying too far from his demons. 4
The Zookeeper's Wife 2017 Drama Never an easy subject to make a film about, but this Holocaust story is well acted, moving and slightly less depressing than most. 3.5
Chicken Run 2000 Adventure, Animation Aside from the brilliant and flawless stop-motion animation, Aardman's first feature film is funny, exciting and clever, with frequent references to many classic films and some inspired voice casting. Simply cracking! 4
Time Bandits 1981 Adventure, Fantasy Little more than an elongated Monty Python story with fantasy elements, but it is frequently funny and the characters are good. Probably a tad too long, but generally enjoyable. 3
Lake Placid 2 2007 Horror, Thriller Exactly the same story as the first film with a quarter of the effects budget and a tenth of the acting talent. It also lacks most of the charm and humour of the original and is best avoided. 1.5
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 2015 Fantasy, SciFi, War Jennifer Lawrence is once again captivating in the lead role, and for the first hour or so this is a pretty gripping war movie. The ending is both bewildering and disappointing though, bringing the story to a lacklustre conclusion. 3
Rocky IV: The American Punch 2016 Documentary The production values are generally low and it relies heavily on archive footage, but this is an interesting and humorous look at the film and its cultural impact on US and Soviet audiences. 3
X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2009 Action, Thriller Taking a rather thin origin story and stretching it out into a full-length film was always going to be tricky, but adding a bunch of weird interpretations of Marvel characters definitely didn’t help. Jackman is decent, but overall this is a bit of a mes 2.5
U is for Unearthed 2012 Horror, Short This first-person horror short was part of the ABCs of Death anthology and has all of Wheatley's trademarks; fear, violence and vengeance. The film is available on Youtube. 3.5
Professor Martson and the Wonder Woman 2017 Biopic, Drama The 'true' story of the Wonder Woman and lie detector creator and his polyamorous marriage. For all its lofty notions of love and freedom, it just came off as a contrived film about sex. 3
Blomkamp Collection (Shorts 2004-07) 2007 Action, SciFi, Short It is great to see some of these shorts made it to the big screen. Chappie is obviously part Tetra Vaal, part Tempbot, part Yellow. Alive in Joburg IS District 9. At about 35 minutes in total, these films are a must watch! 4
Coco 2017 Adventure, Animation, Comedy Beautifully animated and very well told tale of remembering our loves and loved ones, but these these emotional animated adventures have become a production line and the genre needs a rethink. 3.5
Molly's Game 2017 Biopic, Drama An interesting tale of the rise from PA to millionaire poker queen. Brilliantly acted by Chastain and Elba, but the overly sanctimonious last 15 minutes detracts and the film paints Molly in far too much of a good light to be the full story. 3.5
My Life as a Courgette 2016 Animation, Comedy, Foreign Language A lovely stop-motion animated movie about children in a French orphanage. I wasn't really a fan of the art style, but it's the wonderful dialogue that sets this film apart from the Disney animated movies and its 70 minute runtime means there is no filler. 4
