Neill Blomkamp is a South African–Canadian film and advertisement director, writer, producer and animator. Blomkamp employs a documentary-style, hand-held, cinéma vérité technique, blending naturalistic and photo-realistic computer-generated effects. He is best known as the co-writer and director of the critically acclaimed science fiction film District 9 and the dystopian science fiction film Elysium.

After Elysium, he started work on his next sci-fi film Chappie, based on his own short, Tetra Vaal.

In early 2015, it was confirmed that Blomkamp will direct a new film in the Alien franchise. The film is expected to be a direct sequel to the 1986 film Aliens, rather than 1997’s Alien Resurrection.

Blomkamp Collection (Shorts 2004-07) 2007 It is great to see some of these shorts made it to the big screen. Chappie is obviously part Tetra Vaal, part Tempbot, part Yellow. Alive in Joburg IS District 9. At about 35 minutes in total, these films are a must watch! 8
District 9 2009 An incredible debut delivered one of the best sci-fi films in years. A modern parable on the refugee crisis and a dystopian future rolled into an incredible piece of entertainment. 9
Elysium 2013 An unfairly panned blockbuster suffers from it's huge budget rather than relishing in it. Another story of the haves and have nots told taken to frightening heights. 7
Chappie 2015 Some amazing performances and great direction can't hide a poor script. Not quite the modern classic, but a great update on the Short Circuit theme. We are still waiting for a sequel. 8

Summary

When Blomkamp is depicting near-future Johannesburg he shines. He found it a little more difficult when he came out of his comfort zone for Elysium, but still managed to pull it off. An exciting young director who brings the best out of a wonderful actor in Sharlto Copley (three movies, three very different roles, three fantastic performances). It is disappointing that we may never get to see his planned take on the Aliens franchise.
