MovieViews

The MovieMuse Reviews (MovieViews) database is a searchable collection of films that the team have watched, providing a comprehensive guide on what to watch and what to avoid. It provides a link to an in-depth review or a short opinion on the film and a rating, as well as a link to the film’s poster or DVD cover. For more recent entries we are also including a link to the film’s IMDb page and a trailer from YouTube.

You can search and sort the list by individual film names, genre, reviewer, score and other variables to inform you on whether a film is worth your time, or to inspire you for your next movie night.

We will also use the database to create periodic lists of the recommended films in all sorts of categories. These lists will be shared on the website and some will even come with a video.

Border 2018 7, 9, 10 A security guard with a strange gift meets a similar man, causing her to reevaluate her life and the world. It all goes very dark and a bit supernatural as the film goes on, but it was quite mesmerising all the same. 8
They Shall Not Grow Old 2018 6, 21 Incredibly honest and personal accounts of the Great War, despite the heavy handed colourisation and some jarring moments of Hollywood production. 7
Stan & Ollie 2018 3, 4, 7 Telling the story of how the magic ended, this is in many places this is an incredibly sad film, but Coogan and Reilly capture the characters so well that their beautiful friendship and fantastic comedy shines through. 8
McQueen 2018 3, 6 A fascinating insight into the life of (Lee) Alexander McQueen. Far from just a London yob making haute couture, the youngest ever Fashion Director at Givenchy's productions probably told us everything we needed to know about his demons. 8
Mirai 2018 1, 2, 7 A charming, but slight (and slightly dull) tale of family from the eyes of a 5 year old child. Cannot stand up to other contemporary anime blockbusters like Your Name. 6
Three Identical Strangers 2018 3, 6, 7 A fascinating documentary about triplets separated at birth who accidentally find each other. The story of how and why they were separated is as amazing as the story of their life afterwards. 8
Janelle Monáe: Dirty Computer 2018 12 This sci-fi sampler is a simple Big Brother story wrapped around the pop videos for each song from the Dirty Computer album. Your enjoyment will very much depend on your taste in music, but the songs and videos are far stronger than the generic storyline. 6
Minding the Gap 2018 6 Starts as a standard documentary about the camaraderie of a 'family' of skateboarders, but then morphs into an exploration of domestic violence in an American rust best town. Felt personal (and somewhat home-made), but didn't fully explore its topic. 6
Mary Poppins Returns 2018 4, 8, 9 Does a remarkable job of feeling like an extension of the original. Blunt is tremendous when singing, but loses her way with the spoken parts. 7
Little Evil 2017 4, 11 Adam Scott plays his usual 'bewildered everyman' role to perfection, the creepy kid is great and the film is humorous throughout, but the decision to go full-on supernatural for the finale feels like a cheap and sensationalist way to end the story. 6
Insidious: The Last Key 2018 11 Probably more humorous and less scary than the producers were aiming for, but still a perfectly acceptable fourth film in the series with another ballsy performance by Lin Shaye in the lead role. 6
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug 2013 1, 9 The low point of Peter Jackson's Middle Earth movies, with too many scenes drawn out unnecessarily and an over-reliance on characters and situations that never appeared in the book. 5
The Most Hated Woman in America 2017 3, 7 Outrageously funny or deeply offensive depending on your perspective on religion, but overall the film is tinged with sadness and while the historic aspects are somewhat glossed over, the more recent parts of the story are far more gripping. 7
At Eternity's Gate 2018 3, 7 Willem Dafoe is on fine form and the film's use of sound, colour and movement somehow captures the mental state of Van Gogh so that you feel you are inside his madness. Highly recommended. 8
Mary Queen of Scots 2018 3, 7, 15 Two stunning performances from Ronan and Robbie complement a beautifully crafted (if a little one sided) retelling of how England and Scotland finally became united. 8
Mid90s 2018 4, 7 Jonah Hill's directorial debut is a pretty run of the mill coming-of-age skater tale similar to the recent Skate Kitchen. However I found it far more accessible, entertaining and interesting. It also has a great soundtrack and score. 6
Christopher Robin 2018 1, 2, 4 An absolutely delightful live action Winnie The Pooh movie. Everything works well despite nothing standing out. McGregor is a bit hammy, the effects don't always look quite right and the story will probably bore/confuse kids in places, but I loved it. 8
Widows 2018 7, 20 American update of the Linda LaPlant heist drama from the 80s (I think). Great pacing, a brilliant performance from Viola Davis and a story that doesn't descend into gratuitous gunplay like many of its type. 8
RBG 2018 3, 6 Notorious RBG isn't a rapper, she is an octogenarian Supreme Court Judge who has spent her life championing women's rights. This documentary tells her story and offers a fascinating insight into a remarkable woman. 8
Can You Ever Forgive Me? 2018 3, 4, 7 True story of a down on her luck author who forges literary correspondence to make ends meet. I can't agree with Oscar nominations for McCarthy or Grant, but it is a nice film that has enough humour without becoming the kind of farce both are usually in. 7
Bohemian Rhapsody 2018 3, 7, 12 The acting is atrocious, the story so cleansed it isn't really a biopic at all and the cinematography gives everything a TV movie colourised glow that makes everything look staged. But for all that I still found myself enjoying the cheesiness of it all. 6
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs 2018 4, 7, 22 As with most anthology films, some of the tales were hit and miss, but some were excellent (such as Buster and also the wagon train story). It was so wonderfully shot I am surprised it got no awards nominations for cinematography. 8
King of Thieves 2018 I was fearing the worst after seeing the dreadful 'Hatton Garden Job', but this was surprisingly good. A great cast and an intriguing film of two halves. The bumbling and likeable first half comedy and the darker and more sinister second. 7
Green Book 2018 3, 7, 15 if you take it as a biopic of the driver and not of Don Shirley or an exploration of the Green Book itself, then it is a great film. Viggo was brilliant in his lead role and the chemistry with Ali worked well. 8
Beautiful Boy 2018 3, 7 Impeccably acted true tale of a father trying to 'save' his drug addict son. There is little in the way of plot so it would be hard to say I enjoyed the film, or to recommend others watch it, but that doesn't mean I didn't appreciate it. 7
