MovieViews

The MovieMuse Reviews (MovieViews) database is a searchable collection of films that the team have watched, providing a comprehensive guide on what to watch and what to avoid. It provides a link to an in-depth review or a short opinion on the film and a rating, as well as a link to the film’s poster or DVD cover. For more recent entries we are also including a link to the film’s IMDb page and a trailer from YouTube.

You can search and sort the list by individual film names, genre, reviewer, score and other variables to inform you on whether a film is worth your time, or to inspire you for your next movie night.

We will also use the database to create periodic lists of the recommended films in all sorts of categories. These lists will be shared on the website and some will even come with a video.

Men In Black 1997 Action, 4, 17 It's little more than Lethal Weapon crossed with Ghostbusters, but the perfomances of Will Smith and especially Tommy Lee Jones are excellent and the CG effects have held up pretty well. 8
Space Station 76 2014 4, 17 Captures its intended 70's retro-futuristic vibe well, and has some very funny scenes, but runs out of steam due to the lack of an interesting story and an unexpectedly bleak ending. 5
Pulp Fiction 1994 4, 5 Clever, convoluted, witty and undeniably cool, with a great soundtrack and countless memorable and quotable scenes, this remains Quentin Tarantino's finest work over 20 years on. 10
Reign of Fire 2002 Action, 9 The concept of a Dragon-inhabited post apocalyptic world is certainly original, and there are undoubtedly some good moments, but overall this film never really reaches the exciting heights that it promises. 6
A Fish Called Wanda 1988 4 A fairly run of the mill heist caper that is elevated by the comedic performances of its cast, with the outrageous, insane turn by Kevin Kline the standout. 7
REC 2 2009 11 This sequel abandons the suspense and jump scares of its predecessor in favour of all-out chaos, an incomprehensible religion-oriented plot and a very predictable twist at the end. Disappointing. 4
Source Code 2011 17, 20 An incredibly clever, original and thrilling film with a superb, emotion-filled lead performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. It would be almost perfect were it not for the ridiculous last few minutes. 8
The Breakfast Club 1985 4 Over 30 years on, it is showing it's age a little and is incredibly idealistic, but there's no denying the quality of the characters and their interaction with one another. One of the best high school comedies of all time. 8
The Bourne Identity 2002 Action, 20 Matt Damon seemed an odd choice for the role of Jason Bourne, but exceeds expectations in a thrilling movie that redefined the espionage thriller genre and spawned two enjoyable sequels. 8
CHiPs 2017 Action, 4, 5 Despite some half=hearted jokes and plot mechanics (and silly insta-exploding cars!), Chips is still a very funny film with two great leads. I hope it gets a sequel. 6
The Subjects 2016 20 A single room thriller (reminiscent of The Exam) sees medical trial subjects locked in a lab after taking a mysterious pill. Dreadful acting and annoying characters hold the film back, but it is entertaining enough for one viewing. 5
Tron 1982 1, 17 A film ahead of its time, Tron holds up well in terms of its themes and setting. However the very 80s approach to story telling wanes a little too early for the film to truly stand out beyond its nostalgia. 7
The Lost Arcade 2015 6 At its best when wallowing in its reminiscent glow, the film loses its way a little when it hits the here and now. Regardless though it is a very well told tale of the death and rebirth of a lifetime kids today can never comprehend. 7
John Wick 2014 Action, 5 Slight story and little in the way of invention, but the brutal violence and gritty characters carry the film off to a perfectly satisfactory, if not challenging conclusion. 7
Tron: Legacy 2010 1, 9, 17 As stylish as the original and one of the best scores in years. However a disappointing final third and some awful de-aging stop Legacy from being as revered as its inspiration. 7
Raw 2016 7, 11 A ludicrous premise about a vegetarian who goes to vet school and becomes a cannibal. But that doesn't stop it being an enthralling and disturbing voyeuristic thrill. 8
Jawbone 2017 7, 19 An alcoholic ex junior champion boxer battles much tougher demons than his opponent. Rocky for the real world. 8
Wonder Woman 2017 Action, 1, 9 Fun and dumb. Does a good job of telling the origin story, but although Gadot is an alluring lead, I won't be rushing to watch it again any time soon. 7
The End of the Tour 2015 3, 7 Great performances from Segal and Eisenberg, but never really becomes more than an interesting conversation. 6
War Machine 2017 3, 4, 21 It is kind of silly and kind of pointless, but also kind of fun and kind of true. But let's be clear, Brad Pitt is absolutely terrible in the film! 6
Alien: Covenant 2017 11, 17, 20 Shockingly predictable and further proof that the franchise has nothing left to say. BUT, Covenant is still an enjoyable and entertaining couple of hours that is worthy of your time. 6
T2: Trainspotting 2017 7 Danny Boyle's ego gets in the way of a reasonably good visit to see some lost friends. Certainly not groundbreaking in the way the original was, but satisfying all the same. 7
Going in Style 2017 4, 5 A gentle and jolly comedy that but for the big name cast would be no more than a sunday afternoon cable film. 6
North by Northwest 1959 Action, 1, 13 A film screaming out for a modern remake, the leads are great and the scripting fun, but lacking in action (but no more than most 1950s films). 7
John Wick: Chapter 2 2017 Action, 5 Relentless and brutal action, but the film is a little too wrapped up in its own flash production that it fails to fully develop its excellent premise, leaving too much glitz where there should be grit. 7
