MovieViews

The MovieMuse Reviews (MovieViews) database is a searchable collection of films that the team have watched, providing a comprehensive guide on what to watch and what to avoid. It provides a link to an in-depth review or a short opinion on the film and a rating, as well as a link to the film’s poster or DVD cover. For more recent entries we are also including a link to the film’s IMDb page and a trailer from YouTube.

You can search and sort the list by individual film names, genre, reviewer, score and other variables to inform you on whether a film is worth your time, or to inspire you for your next movie night.

We will also use the database to create periodic lists of the recommended films in all sorts of categories. These lists will be shared on the website and some will even come with a video.

Beauty and the Beast 2017 8, 9, 12 An utterly pointless remake that does nothing in live action that the original didn't do in animation. Also has some of the worst blockbuster CGI of recent times. 5
The Guardians 2017 Action, 1, 17 Every bit of the film swings from laughable to passable. The acting, the effects, the story and the humour. Not quite the Russian Avengers. Infact, not even close. 5
Mindhorn 2016 4 A great opening half hour runs out of steam leaving Mindhorn as an amusing curiosity rather than the British comedy classic that some critics would have you believe. 5
Tracktown 2016 7, 19 A film that spends so much time trying to be nice that it doesn't realise the drama that we are hoping will unfold. 4
City of Tiny Lights 2016 5, 7 Riz Ahmed makes a really interesting and intiguing PI, so it is most disappointing that he is put into such a stereotypical role (terrorism and cricket anyone?). One of the least thrilling thrillers in a long while. 4
Slap Shot 1977 4, 19 Click here for our Film Club review. 2.7
The LEGO Batman Movie 2017 1, 2, 4 It is the nods to other cinematic superheroes that draw the most laughs and whilst the second half struggles to keep up the jokes per minute pace of the first to concentrate on the action, LEGO Batman is a much more complete offering than The LEGO Movie. 8
King Kong 1933 1, 11 For a film over 80 years old it still stands up as one of the greatest monster movies. The special effects are matched by the wonderful story that must have truly felt like the eighth wonder all those years ago. 8
Their Finest 2016 4, 7, 16 A very 'nice' period romance that will offend no-one with its perfectly pleasant demeanour. Arterton as always is delightful and all the more endearing for her cutesy welsh accent. 7
XX 2017 11 A horror anthology of 4 short films written and directed by women. Unfortunately the four films range from OK to absolutely terrible and are hung together by poor animations of stereotypical horror iconography. 4
The Comedian 2016 4 A great cast and some fine performances from De Niro and Leslie Mann turn a slightly cliched tale into a funny and endearing comedy. 7
The Fugitive 1993 Action, 20 The filmmaking maybe doesn't hold up to modern standards and most of the twists are pretty well signposted, but the thrills are there and Ford/Jones make a good set of adversaries. 7
The Goob 2014 7 So little happens in the film that I wonder how the writer decided it was finished. Nicely shot and some reasonable acting, but there is nothing to recommend beyond that. 4
Catfight 2016 4, 7 Its USP is the vicious and gratuitous catfights between the female leads, but I am not sure a brutal fight between a pregnant woman and a grieving woman, can ever be funny. No matter how much whimsical music you accompany it with. 5
The Belko Experiment 2016 11, 20 A poor mans Battle Royale set in a high rise office block. Fun, but utterly pointless. 5
While We're Young 2014 4, 7 An uneven comedy-drama with moments that are absurd and some that are just depressing. An interesting attempt at trying to capture the frustrations of life as a forty-something, but as someone of that age it didn’t do anything to enlighten me. 5
Guardians of the Galaxy 2014 1, 4, 17 The pleasant surprise factor is gone on second viewing, but that doesn’t stop this being one of the best Marvel films to date, mainly thanks to Chris Pratt's endearing lead performance and the CGI raccoon and tree-man duo. 7
Monsters University 2013 2, 4 Pixar's take on the Frat-house comedy is far from their greatest offering, but even their mediocre films are better than most CG-animated movies. The return of one of their best duos, Mike and Sully, was also most welcome. 7
The Force Among Us 2007 6 A sometimes interesting look at Star Wars fandom, but it lacks a consistent theme and has low production values. Sadly, despite attempts to dispel the stereotypes associated with Star Wars fans, all it really does is validate them. 4
The Woman In Black - Angel of Death 2014 11 When you can make it out through the darkness, the production design is great, but the story is neither interesting or scary in this disappointing sequel. 4
Rise of the Rabbit 2015 1, 2 Nicely animated, lacking in plot and with unmemorable voice acting, this Chinese offering is still no worse than the Kung-Fu Panda movies it is obviously trying to cash in on. 5
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol 2011 Action, 20 Tom Cruise does his best to ruin it by being miserable throughout, but the supporting cast supply enough humour and excitement to redeem it, and the action sequences are excellent. Probably my favourite of the series. 8
Jason X 2001 11, 17 The characters are as one-dimensional and badly acted as ever, but the move to a futuristic setting breathes a bit of new life into the Friday the 13th series, and the film benefits from not taking itself seriously. 5
The BFG 2016 1, 9 Steven Spielberg adapts Roald Dahl's beloved story and somehow contrives to make it incredibly dull, with an annoying lead actress and unconvincing CGI characters. Probably proves that the story only works for children. 4
Quatermass and the Pit 1967 17, 20 Showing its age in some respects, but this remains an interesting story, acted well and with an action-packed finale. A classic slice of Britich Sci-Fi! 6
