MovieViews

The MovieMuse Reviews (MovieViews) database is a searchable collection of films that the team have watched, providing a comprehensive guide on what to watch and what to avoid. It provides a link to an in-depth review or a short opinion on the film and a rating, as well as a link to the film’s poster or DVD cover. For more recent entries we are also including a link to the film’s IMDb page and a trailer from YouTube.

You can search and sort the list by individual film names, genre, reviewer, score and other variables to inform you on whether a film is worth your time, or to inspire you for your next movie night.

We will also use the database to create periodic lists of the recommended films in all sorts of categories. These lists will be shared on the website and some will even come with a video.

Before I Go To Sleep 2014 13, 20 An intriguing suspense thriller with plenty of tense moments and excellent performances from the small cast, but the finale seems rushed and is unsatisfactory. 6
Persepolis 2007 2, 3, 7 An interesting but bleak life story and good animation can't save the film from being a little long and dull. 5
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 2017 1, 4, 17 Disappointingly little happens and some of the jokes seemed forced, but there is plenty of action and laughs along the way. 6
The Fitzroy 2017 4 A Kickstarter funded traditional British farce set in a dystpoian 1950s Margate. Some of the acting is suspect and the script would better suit the theatre, but the sets and production values are high and the comedy just about hits the mark. 6
Life 2017 11, 17, 20 Billed as claustrophobic horror-thriller in space, the film repeats itsef numerous times as it kills of its crew and only manages a recommendation due to the fun ending. 6
Sleepless 2017 Action, 5, 20 On the face of it Sleepless is a very generic cop thriller. But Foxx and McNeary play their parts well and the film manages to keep the pace for virtually all of its 90 minutes. Certainly more fun than the later Takens or any of the geri-action movies. 6
Colossal 2016 4, 7, 9 A children's movie made for adults with adult themes. It could have worked, but unlikable characters and uninteresting subplot make it a big disappointment 5
The Levelling 2016 7 Despite the director's overuse of symbolic cut scenes and a pretty annoying score, The Levelling is a brilliant debut film. Just be prepared for a quite depressing tone that never lightens. 7
Kidnapping Mr. Heineken 2015 3, 5, 7 A very average (and apparently true) kidnap tale that is made worse by the filmmakers not knowing whether to make the perpetrators heroes or villains. 4
Little Boxes 2016 7 The film is so desperate to sell you its liberal message that it ties itself in knots and forgets to be entertaining. Belongs (and will probably end up) on the Hallmark channel. 4
The Fate of the Furious 2017 Action, 1, 5 Even for the F&F franchise this is a pretty ludicrous film with some terrible dialogue and set pieces. But just like all the rest, there is some fun to be had. 5
The Hatton Garden Job 2017 5 Has hopes to be a 'based on a true story' of the movie Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, but ends up more like an episode of TV show Hustle. 4
Personal Shopper 2016 7, 13, 20 For a paranormal thriller it is a pity that the paranormal seems superfluous. Kristen Stewart is excellent and her character is interesting enough without the need for spirits. 6
Aftermath 2017 7 Taken as either a low budget Hollywood film or a big-budget TV movie, Aftermath crafts a good tale and gives Arnie just enough scope to show off his limited skills as a serious actor. 6
Enemy of the State 1998 Action, 20 It's billing as a 90s action classic is inaccurate as the film turns out to be a rather lame thriller that plays on 90s tech-fear by exaggeration and fantasy. Smith is Smith, but the film is not up to his usual standard. 5
Thor 2011 Action, 4, 9 An entertaining debut for Marvel's God of Thunder. The action sequences are largely forgettable, but as with most Marvel offerings, the humour and charisma of the lead actors is what stands out. 7
X-Men 2000 Action, 1 Assembles a very well-cast and generally well-acted group of characters, but then does very little with them. In retrospect this film feels like it was just a set up for the superior sequel. 6
Logan 2017 Action, 7, 17 To call this a superhero film does it a massive disservice. An emotional and violent road movie that is a fitting end to the Wolverine story and is exactly the mature film that many have been hoping for from this genre. 9
The Dark Crystal 1982 1, 9 The story is a fairly generic fantasy offering, but the puppetry and voice acting is generally impressive and this has aged far better than Labyrinth, despite being produced 3 years earlier. 6
Robocop 1988 Action, 17 An absolute classic of the genre, and still as gut-wrenchingly violent and darkly satirical as it ever was, but recent viewing also revealed a emotional tale about humanity that I hadn't previously appreciated. 10
Star Trek: Insurrection 1998 1, 17 A surprisingly light-hearted and amusing outing for the usually serious Next Generation crew, with the lack of significant deep space action a definite plus-point. Much better than expected! 7
Dressed to Kill 1980 20 Unashamedly taking influence from more than one Hitchcock film, this movie was probably pretty disturbing in its day, but almost 40 years on provides more giggles than scares. 5
Top Dog 2015 4, 8 Exactly as good as you'd expect a family film about International Dachshund Racing to be. Undemanding and instantly forgettable, but entertaining enough. 5
The Croods 2013 1, 2 One of the most gorgeous-looking animated films I've seen, and it has some nice characters and funny moments too. It's just a shame the story is rather lacklustre and predictable. 6
Moon 2009 17, 20 A great performance by Sam Rockwell anchors a dark and intelligent Sci-Fi film that successfully captures the feel of some of the iconic 70's films from the genre. 8
