MovieViews

The MovieMuse Reviews (MovieViews) database is a searchable collection of films that the team have watched, providing a comprehensive guide on what to watch and what to avoid. It provides a link to an in-depth review or a short opinion on the film and a rating, as well as a link to the film’s poster or DVD cover. For more recent entries we are also including a link to the film’s IMDb page and a trailer from YouTube.

You can search and sort the list by individual film names, genre, reviewer, score and other variables to inform you on whether a film is worth your time, or to inspire you for your next movie night.

We will also use the database to create periodic lists of the recommended films in all sorts of categories. These lists will be shared on the website and some will even come with a video.

Live By Night 2016 5, 7, 15 A mobster film with little in the way of action won't float many boats, but the drama is extremely well told and beautifully shot.. Another feather in Affleck's burgeoning director's cap. 8
The Young Offenders 2016 4 This film has everything we love about Irish comedy. Great characters, hilarious situations and a killer soundtrack. Funniest film of 2016 and now has a TV series spin off. 8
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi 2016 Action, 20, 21 Whilst it is easy to commend Michael Bay for restraint, this is more a consideration of his past excesses than this films quality. Films of this type live and die on its leads characters and unfortunately I had little interest for these guns for hire. 6
World War Z 2013 Action, 1, 11 Interesting and exciting, but a little too repetitive and convenient. 6
The Red Turtle 2016 1, 9 A beautiful and mesmerising dialogue-less tale. Wonderfully written, scored and directed. My only detractor was that there were situations where words would/should have been spoken, but the device wouldn't allow. 8
20th Century Women 2016 7 Whether it is its arty-farty attempts to cover a multitude of 'issues' or the slightly dull characters, the film is a disappointing exploration of feminism and its impacts on a 1970s family. 4
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 1982 1, 8 The seminal family movie, thoroughly engaging with a great story, good effects and a weep-fest at the end. What more could you want? 8
Lethal Weapon 1987 Action, 5, 20 Apart from the pointless ending Lethal Weapon holds up extremely well and reminds us of how good Mel Gibson's psycho persona really is. 7
Chicken Little 2006 2 A likeable stock Disney moralistic all American animation, with quite good voice acting. It is inoffensive but nothing special. 6
Wreck-it Ralph 2013 1, 2 A wonderful insight into the world of video games we never see, with a great story, likeable characters and nods to games of all kinds, retro and otherwise. A clever concept well executed. 8
Iron Man 3 2013 Action, 20 A return to some kind of form after the underwhelming second film. It is more of the same, but done well and has some spectacular effects and the story is engaging enough with a few twists to make you fully on Iron Man's side. 7
Quadrophenia 1979 7 The seminal classic Mod v Rockers extravaganza. Great characters, a good story and well choreographed scenes add up to a slice of 60's life that many will remember fondly or with disdain. 8
Big Hero 6 2014 Action, 2 A really great animated film with a wonderful and lovable main character in Baymax. An uplifting story and great animation leaves you hoping for more. 8
Tanna 2015 7, 10, 16 Based on a true story and performed completely by actual Tanna tribespeople. But strip away the experimental nature of the film and you are left with an engaging but slight forbidden love story. 6
Land of Mine 2015 7, 10, 21 An amazing piece of cinema that tells a little known true story of how the Germans POWs were treated after their failed occupation of Norway. Stunningly filmed and beautifully acted. 9
A Man Called Ove 2016 4, 7, 10 Like a straight (but comedic) One Foot in the Grave where Margaret has died and Victor wants to join her, but the world conspires to stop him. Wonderful. 8
Bleed For This 2016 3, 7, 19 The boxing scenes suffer from comparison to Creed, but Teller is excellent in this amazing true life comeback tale. 8
Silence 2016 7, 15 Not the epic Scorsese was hoping for, but an extremely well told historical drama that leaves enough moral questions to reward your patience. 7
Collateral Beauty 2016 7 Far too twee and sickly sweet, but not enough to ruin the film. Though in its desire to clear up all loose ends it betrays its main theme of grief. 6
Friday the 13th Part 2 1981 11 Jason makes an inauspicious debut as the primary antagonist of the series in an incredibly generic slasher offering that is just about redeemed by the last 20 minutes. 5
The Overnight 2015 4 This raunchy comedy offers a few good laughs and cleverly makes you feel just as awkward and uncomfortable as the characters in it. It's also refreshingly short at under 80 minutes! 6
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines 2003 Action, 17, 20 Unfairly lambasted simply for not being as good as its predecessors, this is a perfectly enjoyable action thriller that furthers the John Connor saga well and has the best ending of any film in the franchise. 7
Just Before I Go 2014 4, 7 Courteney Cox makes her film directing debut and finally allows Seann William Scott to shake off the 'Stifler' role. The blend of crude comedy and emotional reflection is jarring at times but this is better than the 10% Rotten Tomatoes score suggests. 7
Grandma 2015 4, 7 Lily Tomlin excels in the role of a woman growing old disgracefully in a film that is more drama than comedy, but still has enough humour to be engaging. 6
Into The Forest 2015 20 Despite a few plot points that strain its credibility, this is a tense survival thriller with compelling performances from the lead actresses and some excellent cinematography. 6
