Podcast 27 – Film Club #17: The Wizard

The MovieMuse crew like waffling on about movies almost as much as watching them, so rather than talk to the dog about the comedic overtones of Se7en or the Wellesian influence on Police Academy, we thought we would record our chats, add a few trailers and movie clips and set them free on the world like a pensioner from cocoon.

Film Club #17 – The Wizard

To cure our Covid-lockdown blues, the MovieMuse team got together on a video call for a virtual pint and a chat. While we were there we thought why not record another entry in our the rapidly growing Film Club. Will the 1989 video-game themed Fred Savage movie The Wizard score high on the leaderboard, or did it drive us stir crazier that we already were?

MOVIEMUSE REVIEW

  • Gordon - "The love for the film is not a sum of its parts, but pure nostalgia"
  • Mat - "Inoffensive is probably the best way to describe it"
  • Simon - "what you would expect for a mid/late 80s teen movie, but I liked it"
3.2

Summary

Whether you see it as an inoffensive 80s family adventure, a Rain Man rip off or  a glorified advert for Nintendo, The Wizard has nostalgia by the bucketload and all of the 80s family movie tropes you could want. Despite the scarily adult themes in places, the film never stops being fun and that is all you can really hope for in a movie of this type.
