2019 Oscars Review

Just as the Academy like to judge the film makers on their output, here at MovieMuse we also like to don our judges wig and assess the nominations and eventual winners in each of the main categories. Just as in our BAFTA 2019 feature, by clicking on the images below you can choose the category you are interested in and jump to a page that details the nominees and the mini reviews of each film from each of the MovieMuse team that have seen them. We also provide our choices for who should win the award and those whom the official academy chose.

The 91st Academy Awards took place on SUNDAY FEBRUARY 24 and were televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide. Prior to the ceremony THE FAVOURITE and ROMA had received the most nominations with 10, including nominations in the categories of Best Picture, Actress in a Leading Role, and Actress in a Supporting Role. Other nominees with multiple nominations included A STAR IS BORN and VICE with eight nominations, BLACK PANTHER with seven, and BLACKkKLANSMAN with six.

2019 Report Card:

Whilst we ultimately only agreed on 6 f the 21 categories this year, we found that the vast majority of awards went to our 2nd choice. There were 4 awards that we were not so pleased with (the biggest being Rami Malek’s Best Actor gong), but for the most part the 2019 Oscars played it relatively safe and we have awarded the American academy a rating of B-.
